Stojko juxtaposes a technical number with a techno beat with
a moving free program to the soundtrack from Dragon: The Bruce
Lee Story. Lee’s martial arts prowess was the inspiration
for the program but the moves by the skating black belt in karate
are pure Stojko.
In creating the program, Stojko had help
from a new friend, martial artist, stuntman and sifu (the Chinese
word for teacher), Toronto-based David Stevenson. Stevenson
had never heard of Stojko when he was called to train the skater
for biking and martial arts segments in the Stojko television
special Elvis Airborne, but that didn’t matter.
Their mutual admiration was founded on respect
for what the other can do.
“There is a difference
between being an actor and doing it and Elvis doing it,” says
Stevenson. “He reminds me of a martial artist at his potential.
His mind is like a computer. You tell him something and
he sustains it”
